What is backflow?

Backflow occurs when the normal direction of water flow is reversed, allowing water from a property to flow back into the main water supply pipes. This presents a potential hazard if your water supply becomes connected with a source of contamination, as the pollutants can then enter the water supply. Backflow is typically caused when water pressure inside your property is higher than the water pressure at the main, or if there is a drop in pressure at the main.
